Notes from the Endocrine Department at Mianyang Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Sichuan, China: May 2016
Dr Ye Haiyan is the Head Doctor of the Endocrine Department at Mianyang Chinese Medicine Hospital. We studied with her in her outpatient clinic in the mornings, where she helped thyroid and diabetes patients using Chinese medicine. In the afternoon we followed her at the endocrine inpatient ward. There we saw many cases of serious diabetes complications, particularly in the elderly.
Dr Ye is an extremely conscientious and diligent doctor. She was also not afraid to break out of her relatively quiet demeanor to very strongly encourage a patient to keep their blood sugar levels in check! It was clear that she had seen so many serious complications from unchecked blood sugar levels and wanted her patients to get the message sooner rather than later.
Due to high blood sugar levels, the healing process in uncontrolled diabetes can be much slower – we saw cases of wounds on the toes or feet that would not heal. We also saw patients coming in with very serious complications, including potential loss of sight and high fevers.
Most patients were given insulin as well as important Chinese Medicine herbal formulas to clear up infections, fevers and other complications. It was wonderful see the successful combined use of Chinese medicine with Western medicine for diabetes, thyroid and other endocrine health issues.
